The Captivation of Eunice Williams

A folk opera
Music: Paula Kimper
Libretto: Harley Erdman

Conceived and developed with Linda McInerney

This folk opera tells the true story of Eunice Williams -- a seven-year old girl from colonial Deerfield, Massachusetts who was captured in a Mohawk raid in 1704. When her father, the town's minster, finally tracks her down years later in Canada and attempts to pay her ransom, she refuses to go back home. Many years later, accompanied by her own daughter, she decides to make a visit back to the place of her birth.

Commissioned for the 300th anniversary of the Deerfield raid, The Captivation of Eunice Williams  explores, with complexity and emotional richness, the nature of familky bonds across generations and the distances between cultures. It is sung in English and Mohawk.
